How do you wash those winter essentials?

Different winter items of clothing

Winter is here, and you might wonder how often you should wash your wardrobe. You don't want to ruin your cosy jackets, coats, jeans and jumpers by overwashing them, but you also don't want to wear dirty clothes that smell bad. So, what's the best way to keep your winter clothes fresh and clean? Here are our top tips for keeping that wardrobe winter warm.

First of all, let's talk about jackets and coats. These are the outermost layer of your winter outfit, so they don't need to be washed as often as other clothes. However, sweat, food, smoke, or pollution will still be attracted to your favourite coat or jacket. A good rule of thumb is to wash them every four to six weeks or whenever they look or smell dirty. All our machines have a special downs setting, suitable for the fullest of feather-filled and down material jackets and coats, ensuring they are washed correctly without causing damage to their material. You can also spot-clean them with a damp cloth or a stain remover for the times when they don’t need a complete wash. As with all garments washed in a laundrette, check the care label and follow the instructions. Once freshly washed, let our dryers take care of the next step. Our tumble dryers have three temperature settings; in most cases, one cycle is enough to dry the items. Alternatively, we offer our lockable drying lockers where you can leave your garment to dry overnight safely and securely. A top tip for when the spring does appear is to ensure they are completely dry before storing them in a closet or a wardrobe.

Next, let's talk about jeans. Jeans are a staple to any winter wardrobe but are also one of the most durable and easy-to-care-for items. You don't need to wash them whenever you wear them unless they get dirty or sweaty. In fact, washing them too often can cause them to fade or shrink. A good guide is washing them once every four or five wears or when they start to lose shape or feel uncomfortable. With all our machines, the detergent is dispensed automatically to the correct load placed in the machine, and we ask that you do not bring your own detergent for this reason. The detergent provided is unscented and allergy-tested, making it safe for all to use. All our machines are A++ energy-rated to ensure that they help increase the longevity of the fabrics.

Finally, let's talk about jumpers, which are essential for keeping you warm and cosy in winter. They come in different materials; the care label should always be your guide. A good rule of thumb is to wash them once every three or four wears from our standard machine, capable of washing up to 9KG, to our giant washer, 19KG and probably big enough to wash every jumper you own! All of our machines have a variety of wash cycles depending on the wash label instructions. Jumpers such as wool and cashmere, which are very delicate, should be hand-washed. Jumpers made from cotton or synthetic fabrics are more durable and easier to care for and, depending on the care label instructions, can generally be washed in a machine.
